  1. The dog in the picture, Rocket Dog passed away last summer due to GME.Granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis is a progressive disease in dogs that affects the central nervous system and is usually fatal although some remissions have occurred. It acts kind of like cancer and is treated with prednisone and other drugs. There is a group on Facebook called Fight GME in dogs and there is a lot of information out there but there is no known cure. So many lives of our pets have been lost and people struggle to find out all the can hoping against hope that a cure will be found or some kind of alternative treatment that can stave off the disease until a cure is found or remission happens.

  2. I am on Facebook in a group that is now sharing pictures and stories of their pets who have passed on. It is sad and yet so much love is shared between owners and their pets. It is very difficult to feel the emotions around a favorite pet's death. You live and learn. Fill the hole in your heart with gratitude for having known them, turn the grief into love. I have had so many pets..Candy, my first dog, the last of the Cocker Spaniels that my parents raised was my first dog. My Mom did not want me to grieve and I knew I needed to. I was so young..I do not think we had pets until we moved to Florida and got a parakeet who we named Tipsy. We went to the Crystal Hamburger place and found a white cat with one green eye and one blue eye and we named her Crystal of course. I had four gerbils named John, Paul, George and Ringo.. I do not think we had any pets for a while until we came back to North Carolina. My Grandfather gave me some rabbits, they did not last long for some reason.
We had a grey cat and a little dog named Tosco. I had some turtles and when I went to college my boyfriend gave me one of the best dogs I ever had,Taffy, a mini collie mix who was the smartest dog in the universe. She was my companion through many trips and moves and she finally passed away in Stokesdale NC. When I lived with all the people in Siler City we had Ivan, a black lab, and Mr. Good Dog and I had a goat named Platero. There were other animals, chickens, and a rooster named Mr. Friendly Rooster. dogs and cats kind of moved in and out with the hippies. After Taffy died I got a dog named Jessie, and I had a cat named Ginseng. I moved in with David and Dave Malloy and Jessie had to stay in a caged in area. She got loose one night when they were shooting fireworks and she ran away to live on a neighboring farm. I finally found her and decided that the little boy who had fallen in love with her would be happier if I left her there.
I was on the move and we moved to the log cabin on Highway 158 and I got a dog that looked like Taffy and her name was Lucy. It was sad when we moved out to Tate Rd because her friend from across the road missed her. I can not remember when she died. I had many dogs out in the country cause so many people dropped them off. Blondie and Zappa who was given away and Blondie who we had to get rid of. Then me and Donnie found a Mother dog with Puppies by the side of the road in March of 1998 or 99 and I kept the mom but she got run over and I kept her puppies and gave them away except for Kes. Kes was one of those wonderful dogs and then the neighbors left cats and a dog under the house across the street. I was going over to feed the cats so they would not come to my house and there was a little scrawny dog up under the house. He had sarcoptic mange and I thought he would be a small terrier type dog so I named him Eddie after Frazier Crane's father's dog on Frazier. he grew very large. he was part Chow and part Maremma Shepherd. He was a wonderful dog as well. They moved with us to Stoneville along with two cats, Murphy and Sonia. Murphy got old and died and Sonia just passed away a couple of years ago. I think she was 13 or 14 years old.then Eddie got cancer and all I had left was Sonia and Kes. Knowing that Kes was older I got a mini dachshund named Rocket Dog. Kes passed away when I was in Florida going through my Mom's house after my Mom passed away. so I had Rocket Dog and Sonia. One day I found Sonia under the porch, she had passed away from unknown causes but she was old.. I went to the Goodwill one day and these children were dragging two kittens around found in Ferris Park. My neighbor had wanted one so I go one.. then my neighbor changed his mind!! so I had Sonia and Toto as well at the time.. Now we only have one cat, Toto..I miss Rocket Dog and feel like I might never get another dog because of my age and I don't know who would take care of one if we wanted to go somewhere. I know my neighbors would but I would hate to get one and have to leave it here.

  3. Of course I left out Mr. Spock who was a wonderful cat who was left by some people who came to stay with us while they were being stalked. He lived with us on Tate Rd. Several dogs and cats kind of cycled through there because people dropped off so many. I gave away a ton of dogs back in those days. Mr. Spock lived there while Murphy was there. Eddie took care of them when their Mom got run over. I found a mini dachshund in the parking lot during this time and because I was so used to my dogs having sense enough to stay out of the road I let him run and he got run over. that is when I started wanting another one. So when Eddie died I got Rocket Dog. It breaks my heart because he was just 7 years old and got GME a progressive disease for which there is no cure. I kept him alive for another 6 months after his diagnosis. I want another dog but I am going to wait if I get one at all until I go to Florida at some point.I will get one from the animal shelter that has some age if I get one at all..
